| chebbah's Full Review: harman/kardon DC520 Single Cassette Deck |
I had destroyed my third tape deck in a row. For some reason, the side that records always dies on me. Maybe it's the number of mixed tapes I make, maybe it's something else, but it always happens. I had gone through Sony, Technics amd then Sony again. This time I marched into the store and right up to the salesperson. I asked him to show me the absolute best cassette deck that he had. Without delay he pointed to the Harman Kardon. Being a salesperson he also had to tell me zillion other reasons to buy this cassette deck, but I tuned him out as I examined the deck.
I asked to see the second best, he pointed to the Onkyo right beside it. I have an Onkyo receiver, so I was tempted to go that way, but in the end I picked the Harman Kardon. I can't really say why I picked one over the other. Perhaps it was the fact that the salesperson pointed to it without delay, he didn't have to think about which one was best, he knew. And yes, sometimes I make my decisions based on something as lame as that.
I drove home and hooked up the new cassette deck. I played a few tapes and then decided to start a mixed tape. I recorded off of CD, vinyl, and other tapes. When I was finished I listened to the final product. Even though I had adjusted the recording volume accordingly the finished tape wasn't very evenly recorded. The songs off of CD were way louder than the other songs, so I make sure to take that in mind when I make a tape now.
It is a beautiful tape deck, not too large or bulky. The only problem I have had is that occasionally the eject button on the right side sticks a little, but it seems to be getting better with time. Every once in a while I wonder how that Onkyo would have been, but I would say that overall I have been very satisfied with this cassette deck. I would recommend this deck to anyone who needs a new cassette deck and wants something a little nicer but still reasonably priced.
