| tommiles's Full Review: Teac W-518R Single Cassette Deck |
The TEAC W-518R dual cassette deck is an excellent piece of equipment at a budget price. I bought mine 18 months ago for $99.95 at our local REX Electronic Shop. I have used it continually since that time. I dub tapes and make direct audio recordings at the rate of 3 to 5 hours a day, 3 to 4 days a week plus an average of 1 to 2 hours a day, 5 days a week listening to tapes. This totals around 1200 hours of use without a problem.
The only flaw I have ever found in this deck is the record side makes a clicking sound if the pause button is not down while the other side is playing. This started about 3 months after purchase and seems to have no bearing on record quality or anything else. The unit is black and stylish looking. All controls and labeling are easy to read and use.
The main specifications and features of the TEAC W-518R are as follows:
Heads:
· One erase on deck 2
· One record/Playback deck2
· One playback – rotating head on deck 1
Motor:
A DC Servo motor with wow & flutter at: 0.09% (WRMS)
Signal-to-noise ratio:
· 55 dB (3% THD level, weighted)
· 65 dB (Dolby B NR, over 5 kHz)
Frequency response:
· 30 - 16,000 Hz (Metal)
· 30 - 15,000 Hz (CrO2)
· 30 - 14,000 Hz (Normal)
Power requirements:
· 120V AC, 60 Hz
Weight and dimensions:
· 7 1/4 lbs (3.3 kg)
· 17 1/8" x 5 1/8" x 8 7/16"
Features:
· High/normal-speed dubbing and recording
· Auto-reverse playback with direction key (deck 1)
· Dolby B noise reduction
· Double-deck continuous playback (deck 2 to 1)
· 2-color LED level meter
· One-touch recording
· Fully auto-stop
· A 3-position tape selector - Normal/CrO2/Metal on deck 2
· Auto tape selector on deck 1
· High speed dub LED indicator
· Tape index counter with counter reset button on deck 2
I would recommend this deck for anyone desiring a low-priced deck with good quality and many features. It is not a professional deck but out performs some of the 200+ dollar decks I’ve used before.
