| Aphga's Full Review: Canon Elph2 APS Film Camera |
I took this camera on a London vacation and I have a great collection of photos to prove it!
The Elph 2 is truly a pocket camera... tiny and light-weight... which is why it is such a great vacation camera. The Advanced Photo System allows you to choose your photo format: classic, wide angle, or panorama print.
The APS film is a cartridge that you simply drop into the camera. When you snap the little lid closed, the film automatically winds into position. It's a piece of cake!
This is a point-and-shoot camera with automatic focus and flash. The flash mode offers red-eye reduction or not, depending on your setting. Unless flash is turned off, it will flash even for daytime shots. This frequent flashing would probably use up the battery quickly, so I recommend that you turn it off when it is not needed. The camera remembers the last setting you used, and returns to that setting when you turn the camera on.
When your film is developed, instead of the usual strips of negatives, you get a single print with all your pictures represented in tiny full-color rows. Each picture is clearly numbered, so ordering reprints is a snap! Your film is returned to you in its original cartridge so it has greater protection from light damage than usual.
The zoom feature is handy but, at 2X, it is limited.
You can set your camera to print the date on the front and/or back of the photos. I prefer the date on the back so it doesn't interfere with the aesthetic beauty of the photo.
There is also a feature that allows you to select the quantity of prints you want of a specific photo. Suppose you are at a family reunion and you take a group shot that you want to send to everyone...You can set the quantity before you snap the shutter and avoid having to get reprints.
The camera comes with a little case that can be attached to a belt or purse strap. It also has a wrist strap.
I love this little camera and am very happy with the photos it took. My only disappointment is that it will not allow me to take a night picture with a manually operated shutter. On rare occasions, a slow exposure of night lights can make an interesting photo.
The tiny size of this camera makes it wonderful to carry, but the controls are so small that large fingers might have difficulty using it. Some of the less frequently used controls are operated with a projection on the wrist strap. You also have to take extra care to keep fingers out of the lens field, although I did not find this to be a problem.
The view you get through the viewfinder is also small. I found that I was not too sure what details were actually in the shots that I took. But I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and detail in the photos I got back.
