| amyquilts's Full Review: Canon Elph2 APS Film Camera |
A few months ago, I came to this web site to choose a small camera for an upcoming trip to Paris. I already have a 35mm SLR (Canon EOS) and find that it most often sits in the hotel room while I'm travelling. It's big, awkward and bulky.
I soon realized that APS might be the format for me, since my requirements for this new camera were extreme portability and good picture quality.
Based on what I read here and a few other sites, I narrowed my choice down to the Elph 2. Once I held it in my hands, I was sold.
7 rolls of film have just come back from the lab and I am ECSTATIC!
First of all, let me say that I had very reasonable expectations of the APS format and what kind of pictures it could deliver. I knew before I bought the camera that I couldn't expect 35mm quality. I stuck with 200 ASA film, to reduce the possibility of grainy pictures.
The results are wonderful.
Most importantly, this camera is TINY, which means I had it with me every single day of our trip. No shots were missed because I left the camera back in the room. I just slid the case onto my belt and it was at hand at all times.
There are two things that have surprised me about the photos: the way it captured shots on the fly perfectly in focus (out of the top of a moving double-decker sightseeing bus) and the intensity of the colours on the best-lit and best-exposed shots. It also did a good job with the night shots I wanted. Not stellar (excuse the pun), but good enough.
Of course, nothing will cure a grey day. But even some of the photos taken in the rain are striking and clear. Shots through plate glass windows are perfect (I had remembered to disable the flash, of course).
I'm just floored by this tiny wonder of a camera.
The few negatives I experienced are no cause for concern, and didn't hamper me in any significant way...but I'll mention them in case it may help others.
The viewfinder window is very very small. It can be awkward when you're new to the camera. And the panoramic format shots were pretty grainy on all my rolls. I did expect that, however, and didn't take many of them. I'd recommend sticking to the classic and wide formats and only using panoramic for the shot you can't live without.
Overall, I'm thrilled with this camera. I thank tennis_player for his advice on the subject.
