| gizmoman's Full Review: Olympus Stylus Epic DLX 35mm Film Camera |
We just purchased our second Olympus Stylus (Epic this time). The first one died after 6 years of frequent use, after some 3000+ excellent photos.
At the end of the roll the camera motor keeps pulling on the film for a while and high forces are momentarily created until the motor switches to rewind. This is common on many P&S cameras. This is when our old Olympus Stylus died, a gear stripped.
On the new camera we will avoid this problem by pushing the film rewind button just before the end of the roll.
We picked the fixed focal length Stylus again. Small zooms are tricky to make, there are many moving parts which generally translates to less accuracy, more bulk, more pieces to potentially break down, not to mention reduced image quality. The 35mm focal length of the Stylus lends itself to most photo situations and does so without noticeable distortion.
Olympus company makes high precision optical instruments for the medical and other industries and the quality shows in this little camera as well. We only use our other bigger 35mm cameras when we need other focal lengths or large blowups.
Try to avoid using the flash indoors when taking pictures of kids. Red eye is a problem. We've spent hours with the magnifier and a retouching pen. The flash is too close to the lens. Red eye reduction helps a bit. Turn on all the available lights to help close kids pupils a bit when taking flash photos indoors.
Always use the strap to avoid potential drop. The small thing can be slippery.
