| libens's Full Review: Pentax PZ-1P Film Camera |
I've had this camera for over two years, and it's become one of my favorites.
Ergonomics: well placed dials and buttons, easily accessible, you can do all the important operations with your pointing finger and thumb while looking through the viewfinder, and the camera is well shaped and comfortable in your hand.
Hyper mode: easy-to-use shiftable program. Point the camera somewhere. Don't like the aperture chosen? Change it with the dials, and the shutter speed will automatically change to keep the exposure right. Change your mind? Hit one button and the exposure will change back to the camera's guess.
Green mode: you can configure the camera to a particular set of options, and then switch to them later at will by moving the power switch from "on" to "green." For example, I have mine set up for spot metering and bracketing; so if I come to a particularly tricky exposure, I just switch to green mode, spot, and then take three frames.
Flash: Has a built-in flash, as well as an off-center flash shoe, making it possible to easily have two flashes going at once. Flash exposure compensation makes it easy to stop down the flash 1 or 1 1/3 stops for fill flash. In combination with the flash sync of 1/250, this makes it possible to take very nice outdoor shots.
Miscellaneous: leader out, 4fps, mirror lockup via 2s prefire, excellent metering system, a host of custom functions.
Disadvantages: not many. The AF is a bit slow and indecisive compared to an F100 that I've tried, although I've never found it to be a problem. Pentax lens lineup is not quite as extensive as Nikon's or Canon's (for example, no IS lenses -- although Pentax has taken out some patents in this area).
Combined with the Pentax glass (my favorite is the 85mm/f1.4), this system is capable of taking excellent pictures and handling almost anything that you throw at it.
