I have the Polk EX series 5 1/4 inch component system in my car and I think that they are very nice sounding speakers. They are not too expensive and for the price I don't think they can be beat.
The tweeters push out the high frequencies and they sound great. No distortion and you can notice them unlike other tweeters I have heard.
The mid range woofers sound really good as well. They pump out all the sound you need.
Combine these two with the preset crossover and you have yourself a quality sound system for you ride. I like the crossover because you don't have to tinker with it to make your system sound good. Polk already did that.
To complement my component system I also have 5x7 read deck Polk EX series full range speakers.
Together you have a top notch system. This is just with factory stereo. If you add a quality head unit like a Sony or Kenwood (these are just the first two that popped up in my mind. there are plenty of good head units out there) you can really start jamming.
Add a EQ and fine tune the sound, add a subwoofer to get the deep low end frequency and you have a competition ready system.
You might be thinking, Compete! Well, yes, competition doesn't mean you have to have 60 1000 watt amps and 20 subwoofers. The sound quality of the EX series is in my opinion and other professional car stereo installers I have talked to is so good that it sounds better then the DX and DB series Polk speakers. This is mainly due to the fact that you need an enormous amount of power to make the DX and DB series sound All right
I know a guy who spent 1000s on a stereo system for his car and some kid in a '92' ford escort pulled up next to him and had a better sounding system. The kid with the escort had the EX series in his car.
My point is that you don't need an expensive system to have a nice sounding system, The Polk EX series is by far the nicest system I have heard for that price.
If you are considering the EX series, GET IT. It is so worth it.
