| walzking's Full Review: Polk Audio dX9 Car Speaker |
Polk Audio speakers hold a special place in my heart - years ago, when it was a much smaller and scrappier company, one could buy their raw drivers as well as their (excellent) finished home audio speakers, and I slapped four of their least expensive into some funky maple boxes I had lying around and hey presto! Instant high-end!
Now that they have branched out into making speakers for every thinkable use, one might expect Polk to have homogenized their approach and their sound - but, happily, they've done neither. The first indication was their 5.1 surround setup for my computer - finally, computer hi-fi! But after slapping four of their latest car speakers into my trusty Mazda Protege, I am a certified Polkophile. The fronts are 6x8" factory replacements, the model EX-682 - as smooth and as musical a coaxial car speaker as I have ever heard. And the rears - the 6x9" 3-way DX-9s - are all that and more, adding a palpable presence to virtually every musical source one can throw their way.
But be warned - you might want to revamp your electronics setup in your car after hearing the Polks underamplified, as I first did. Nothing unpleasant, mind you, just too damn polite. But bypass the head unit's meager amp and slap in two serious high-power amps via the pre-outs, and the Polks really start to sing!
In sum, I had been afraid my pickiness would make me regret the day I didn't splurge for component speakers and subs all round. But after hearing my Polks, I'm convinced separates are totally unnecessary...unless you're into braggin or wasting money!
