| dlloyd's Full Review: Pioneer DEH-P4000 CD Changer |
I recently replaced an old Panasonic CD player (which was great for its time but showing its age, mainly in the form of a dead LCD display) with a Pioneer DEHP-4100 unit (the x000 series players have all been replaced by newer models with x100 designations). It lists for $275, I believe, but I was able to buy it for $199 - and I'll be getting that money back because I bought it through my PointClick account!
At 45 watts peak and 22 RMS, this unit, along with others in the Pioneer line, is the most power that can be had from a car stereo without the added expense, weight, and complexity of separate amps, and it's more than enough for my listening needs. It features the now-common detachable face, plus built in alarm features and a remote control. The sound is very crisp and clear, but that's probably helped by my aftermarket speakers.
Install is no more or less complex than with any other in-dash CD unless you choose to take advantage of the unit's built-in alarm system - which at this point I didn't. For me, it was a matter of pulling out the factory wiring harness and clipping off the Panasonic adapter that had been attached to it, then attaching like-colored wires from Pioneer's supplied adapter. All in all it probably took me 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, but had I not been fairly famliar with the process of dismantling my center console it probably would have taken longer.
The improvement in sound quality is evident even just listening to the radio. The 'Easy EQ' feature provides a number of preset equalizer setups, and it's possible to define a custom one as well. There are a huge number of options available. Besides the normal front-back and right-left fader controls, there are settings for boost specific KHz output ranges, cut specific ranges from the rear speakers, set the sensitivity of the FM seek/scan features, name CDs, and more... I can see myself spending a lot of time trying to decide what settings I like best.
A great sounding unit for a great price - get rid of that factory cassette player NOW!
