I bought my Sony receiver two years ago before I started college, and I've had no problems with this one since.
It comes with a phono input with ground- increasingly rare in new receivers these days- as well as a CD in, tape in/tape out, and a VCR input that's perfect for running a line from your computer. I've paired it with two Polk speakers, and sound quality is beautiful. In a dorm room setting it's a beast; maybe a touch overpowered but the quality is second to none. It's survived move-ins and move-outs and being kept in a car trunk for three hours in 98 degree weather.
In a dorm room situation, I've never had much need for a remote control, but the features on this one are pretty comprehensive. Any operation on the face of the receiver is executable on the remote control. And the volume wheel spins itself when you change the volume using the remote, which I find really fun. A note- to use the headphone jack, you'll need a small-to-large headphone adapter or headphones that come with a large plug. It'll support two separate sets of speakers, which I've not found a use for.
I've enjoyed this receiver a lot, and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants a reasonably powerful stereo without surround sound.
