| grgcombs's Full Review: Denon AVR-3300 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I owned my Onkyo TX-DS838 for over three years before deciding to replace it. I was unhappy with it's Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound decoding, and I was very unhappy with its limited number of digital inputs. The tuner was a chore to run from the remote control, and the overall sound quality was questionable. I was reluctant to buy a new receiver because I spent over $1300 (US) new.
After these several years of ho-hum performance in my home theatre, I knew that I certainly wasn't getting my money's worth of enjoyment out of it, so I decided to do a minor overhaul. Money was definitely an issue. I certainly couldn't afford to blow away another $1300 on a receiver, just to have it be another piece of junk sitting in the corner of the study.
I started by selling my old receiver on Ebay, to help the cash situation. After the sale, with the addition of an extra couple hundred dollars, I had nearly $900 to go towards the cause.
After visiting my local high end audio store, I had definitely decided on Denon's product range. The quality is exceptional, the looks are sharp and sleek. And above all, their mid-to-high-range receivers are very reasonably priced. I knew that I wanted both DTS and Dolby Digital, as well as the 6-channel decoder input for future surround sound algorithms. My main choices were the 3300 and the 2700. The sound quality is very similar between the two, the deciding factor for the 3300 was the number of inputs, both digital and analog. The price was around $800, so it was well within my range.
Since the purchase, my home theatre feels like it has a whole new life. Even surround sound from cable television is much improved. DTS blows me away. When I watch any of my Dolby Digital movies, I feel like I had slept through all the previous viewings. The quality of sound is truly exceptional. The additional inputs allowed me to simplify all my wiring as well.
Well worth every penny. I would recommend it to anyone looking to buy a receiver in the $500-1500 price range. That a big leap, but this receiver should be selling at twice it's price.
