I own an HK AVR 20 mk II and loved it, but I wanted to get in on 5.1 digital sound (and more power) for my DVD's so I picked up the AVR 500. I considered the AVR 300 first, but I wanted DTS and a little more bang for my buck. I was surprised to discover that the AVR 500 was not as powerful as expected. The sound in all settings- Stereo, 3 stereo, Logic 7 and especially Dolby digital were unbelievably crisp and clean. I think this cleanness made me search for the distorted sound that I was so used to in other receivers. The AVR 20 mk II at 40 watts per channel sounds louder than the AVR 500 (80 W.P.CH) at 50% volume, but when it comes to clarity of sound, (except for stereo setting) the 500 blew it away.
One problem I noticed with my AVR 500 is that twice the volume suddenly fluctuated up and down uncontrollably, then the db display vanished or showed partial numbers. The only way to resolve this is to reset the microprocessor! (unplug the unit)
At $600.00 (my cost) the AVR 500 is better than anything else at that price.
I have heard that Marantz has a great AVR receiver for a little over $700.00 this news was discovered after I bought the HK.
