When the Onkyo 939 came out, I was the first one to get one on my block. This receiver had everything that I could have wanted in a receiver (at the time). I have heard other receivers that have AC3(Dolby Digital) and that new format called DTS(Don't know what that stands for) that are pretty inexpensive. I still stand behind my 939 every time.
The quality in this unit is outstanding! It is THX certified and has provided me with years of great performance. This unit is not the easiest to set up, but if you want something that will give you great sound, this is the one to get. It has built in amps for all five channels (L, C, R, RR, and LR). It gives out 120 watts per channel and uses two 24-bit Motorola chips to process the sound. It even has a nice big fan in the rear of the unit that only comes on when the unit needs cooling.
Another thing that I really like about this unit is that it was made to be set up correctly. It has a built in pink noise generator which will allow you to set the volume control to 0 db and then use a sound level meter to set each individual speaker at 75db. Doing this calibrates your system for the room that it is in so that each speaker is at the proper sound level for the particular room and surroundings. You can even set the how far each speaker is away from the listening position. The unit will time the sound differently so that the sounds will all get to your ear all at the same exact time.
It has 18 different surround modes like Studio, Arena, Stadium, etc. It also has 7 unique video inputs. I have three VCRs, a laser disc player, a dvd player, a DSS unit, and Nintendo 64 all hooked up to this thing and it works great! You can also set the level of each speaker via on-screen menus. If you want quality sound, this is indeed the unit to get.
