My opinion is actually for the JBL N28s, which are there current Northridge-series, large bookshelf speakers. I bought them to act as rear speakers in my motley Cerwin-Vega/Infinity system, and I couldn't be happier with them. The sound quality nicely compliments the boomy, crunchy tendency of the Cerwin-Vegas and works well with the sharp definition of my Infinity center-channel. JBL I've found to strike a nice middle ground between Infinity and CV, not being as cold and clear as the former nor as gritty as the later.
They're competatively priced, and are actually a little large for the 'bookshelf' category; I'd be tempted to call them small floorstanding speakers at almost 20" tall. Retail stores tend to sell them for $300/pair but they can be had online for $250 with some careful looking. They're worth every penny, and work well in concert with others as well as a solo pair.
Some specs:
2-way, 8" sub
150 Watts
8 Ohm Impedence
Weigh about 50lbs/pair (keep in mind when ordering catalogue/online)
Recommended:
Yes
