Pros: Powerful speakers, aesthetically pleasing design, good connectors
Cons: $16 for insurance. That is, as long as the tweeters haven't blown yet
The Bottom Line: A beautiful set of speakers, if you can find a pair anymore, as they are discontinued. Audiophiles, pick up a pair if possible, but order those breakers ~

| midimykeys's Full Review: JBL HLS810 Main / Stereo Speaker |
My roommate purchased a pair of these back in '02 from Best Buy. He was a bit of an audiophile, compiling amplifiers on top of amplifiers, all going to different speakers. Each amp had piggybacked RCA wires from the last amp, so it worked pretty much as an over-sized equalizer, able to adjust 9 sets of speakers. This particular set were, by far, his best pair. These made such a difference in his setup, as they were the speakers directly to the listener's sides.
I saw a cosmetically flawless pair 3 weeks ago at a pawn shop for $100, so I bought them. Wired them to my 120w/channel pioneer THX amp, and listened at an incredible volume for a few hours, and low and behold, a tweeter blows. Call Harmon, which handles JBL, and ordered another tweeter for $30.04. They tell me I need a tweeter protect breaker, for $8.00, and it's a good idea to get another one for the tweeter that has not blown yet. Apparently, through communication with Harmon, I found out that this part was made only for the HLS series speakers, as they have a problem with the tweeters blowing out. So I ordered 2 along with the tweeter, totaling $53.74 with shipping. Received the parts, replaced and installed, and they couldn't sound better. If you care about hearing sub bass frequencies, you'll want a sub with these, although they sure are good for decent bass you would hear out of a pair of 8's. The tweeters are horn style. If you have a good receiver, you don't need the treble all the way up. I'm lucky, I have a mic I place in the middle of the room, and the receiver calibrates it all for me.
