| orphius25's Full Review: Acoustic Research S112PS Subwoofer Speaker |
This is a really good sub. It will fill the gap at the low end of the frequency range nicely for most applications. To get something much better would cost several hundred more at least. Bought it for $150 at Sears. Cant really complain at that price. Gives music and movies a full powerful sound. I decided to test it will a sine wave generator. Found that the unit responds down to about 15hz. I must point out that my AR-S112PS is rated down to 35hz in the owners manual. Above it says its good to 20hz. I dont know where that figure comes from. When I say it will respond at 15hz I dont mean it sounds good. About all you get is port noise. At that frequency no sound should be heard. Vibration should be felt. Even at 35hz port noise can be a problem. Dont let this information stop you from buying this sub. I have played whatever selection I wanted with this sub on two different systems and have never reached its limit or noticed it to sound distorted. The volume levels needed for it to respond at extreme low frequency are not reached during normal operation. Hence the reasonable rating of 35hz. The sub never overheats, it didnt even overheat while reproducing the 15hz sine wave at full volume. I would certainly recommend this sub to you. If you want something better you will probably have to pay more.
