i bought the jvc 501 quite some time ago, when it was first released, and i have to say, i've been extremely pleased with it. at it's release, this player was loaded with more features than most available, including exceptional audio and video output. it features all the outputs you need to hook it up to your dolby digital/dts receiver, and s video outs if you are lucky enough to have an s video tv. the picture is awesome, even on my modest 27' tv [with no s video] with it's 500 lines of resolution and fine tuning settings which include a sharpness and noise reduction adjustment. this dvd player looks incredible on all tv's i've seen it on. in fact, when i bought it, several local electronics stores were using this model to demo their hdtv's and trinitron tv's. lately they are using the 501's big brother, the 701. i imagine the picture quality remains it's best selling point. a friend of mine just purchased a new model sony dvd player, which is very comparable to the jvc, but the menu systems were confusing for the average user, and it lacked several features the jvc has, including digital zoom. any one can use, and understand the 501's menus and settings options, and the digital zoom is very cool. the remote is huge[very difficult to lose] with large buttons so you don't need little bitty fingers to push them. i've been using the xv 501 for over a year now, and have had no issues to report. and even with all the new fancy players coming out, the 501 holds it's own with excellent picture and sound quality, lot's of great features, and a friendly usability for tweaking and adjustments. i highly recommend this model, or it's current incarnation, the 511 [ i think that's the model #]
