| burnietx's Full Review: JVC XV-501 DVD Player |
Here are my major complaints with the JVC XV-501:
1. It locks up sometimes.
2. Overlay of menu items is faulty.
3. The remote control is terrible.
Details:
--------
1. When playing, the unit will occasionally freeze -- which is something I have never seen in A/V hardware. It literally locks up, much like a computer. There is no way to unfreeze the player, besides physically unplugging the unit from the power outlet. This happens at random and cannot be recreated. This problem does not seem related to heat, layering issues or anything else in my scope of knowledge.
2. On some DVD's, the overlay on the menu selection will sometimes not overlay properly. Here is an example -- on the front end menu of a DVD, you can select PLAY MOVIE, FEATURES and LANGUAGES. When you highlight FEATURES instead of the word FEATURES turning the highlight color, a second word FEATURES will appear to the left of the original word instead of directly on top of it. This problem is just odd.
3. The remote stinks. It has a joystick instead of buttons to navigate the menus. This would not be so bad, except that to confirm a choice, you have to press directly down on the top of the joystick. This never works right. You always end up moving your selection instead of confirming it. It is a terrible design.
