| flindingo's Full Review: Toshiba SD-5109 DVD Player |
Sony may be associated with all things Electric, however other brands like Panasonic, Phillips, and Toshiba all breakthrough with amazing products. This DVD player is one of the most impressive DVD players I've reviewed. The features on this which are awesome are the dual disc support, 5.1 Analogue output, Dobly Digital Decoder, and Progressive Scan Output.
If you've read my other reviews you'll get an indepth look at the 5.1 Analogue output, and it's importance and practical uses. However what really sets this player apart from the rest is the Progressive Scan, this is the feature I'll focus on. The progressive Scan means that it will play the DVD disc at a full 60fps, (60 Frames Per Second), at full resolution.
Regular Television shows TV at 60 fields per second (2 fields = 1 frame) so that is 30fps (frames per second). How it does this, is it shows every other line of the picture at 1/30 a second, and the other line of picture at 1/30. (There is an Odd and Even field, all the odds go first, then the Evens go second and the mesh together to make 1 solid picture frame 30 times a second.) The progressive scan, shows the whole image, it does not interlace it it shows one whole solid image 1/60 a second, so you get 60 images a second, for much smoother picture. Also since it is not splitting the picture in half the image quality amazing, for there is no jitters or shakes caused by interlacing pictures. (If you watch TV look at a diagonal line like in the Simpsons on a sports field, and you'll see how it gets jagged, that's from interlacing.)
I hope that more or less explains it. But in the simplest terms, the picture is fantastic it's like a movie which shows us frames per second, instead of fields. (Movies are 24 frames per second), the image is totally smooth and crisper than anything else you'll be able to find. The downside is you need a TV to support this (ie. Pretty much only HDTV supports it), but for other features and price this beats Sony Hands down.
