| kevins10's Full Review: Sony SLV-779HF VHS VCR |
I actually own last years version of this VCR, which has the model number SLV-778HF. I've looked over the specifications on Sony's site and there appears to be no changes at all, just a new model number. I've owned my Sony VCR for a little over a year now and have used it to play numerous tapes and record several shows. I have never had any problems with it playing and recording, and it tends to do a much better job on tapes that the copyright protection is wearing out on. (I have a JVC VCR as well, and when this occurs, the JVC can't even play the tapes, but the Sony does with minimal interference.)
Highs: Has a set of input jacks on the front as well as a set in the back. You can have two different things plugged into it at all times and switch between them. This is a great feature if you're like me and have a DVD player and a Laser Disc player you would like to use on the same TV. The adaptive picture control is nice and you will rarely have to use manual tracking due to this feature. The auto head cleaning feature is excellent, I have yet to see any degradation in playback or recording over a year, while my JVC is in need of a head cleaning after only nine months. This VCR also automatically sets the clock to the correct time. This is a great feature, only marred slightly by noting that sometimes the time-signal sent over the cable is very wrong. (But this isn't the VCR's fault at all.) This VCR is also easy to program, and lets you use either VCR+ or manual settings easily.
Lows: Be sure to use the easy-setup button to set this VCR up for the first time. Trying to do otherwise is a very frustrating exercise. After you've done that, fine-tuning settings is easy. On a few tapes the adaptive picture control cannot settle on what settings are best and manual tracking will be necessary to get a good picture.
Bottom Line: This is an excellent VCR for the price, I paid a lot less that list price for mine (which was $249) because it was an open-box item, but it had never been used. If you like your VCR to give crisp, clear playbacks of your tapes without having to fool around with tracking this VCR is for you. The auto head cleaning feature will mean you'll probably never have to worry about cleaning the heads either.
