| killerinstinct's Full Review: Panasonic SJ-MJ70 Personal MiniDisc Player |
The Panasonuc SJ-MJ70 (hereinafter reffered to as the MJ70) was the world's tiniest portable md player with the longest battery life (on the internal and external battery) until august of 1999. The newest, smaller portable players, are only fractions of a MILLIMETER smaller, and barely a GRAM lighter, with about 5-10 more hours of play time.
The Panasonic comes with a tiny internal rechargeable battery that will play up to 12 hours on one charge. This is more then enough time for me, but if you are away from a power source, one "AA" battery will power it for 24 hours, and a fully charged internal battery with the external "AA" will give you 40 hours.
I love the size of the MJ70, and even more so, its weight (or lack thereof). On your hand, even with a md and battery inside, it weighs little to nothing. In fact, the main reason I bought the MJ70 over Sony's E-55 and Sharp's MS-301 was it's size, weight and battery life. I also liked the way it looked. One online seller of this product had the phrase "James Bond-like," which I thought fit this md player rather nicely.
The buttons on the main unit are on the side where the headphone/remote plug goes, and fit in nicely with the rest of the player. They are easy to push, yet they dont acidentaly go off in your pocket. There is no LCD on the main unit (for size and weight purposes), but I found the LCD on the remote to be just fine for me. The EL backlight also is a nice bright blue, that stays on for just the right amount of time.
The only disagreements I have with this product is that the clip to attach the remote ot yourself is not connected to the remote, but is a seperate clip that you attach to the headphone cord, and then clip to yourself. I am not sure why Panasonic does this, but it is a very silly design. I have already lost the clip to the remote--yet the remote is light enough that you dont feel it pulling on your ears.
The MJ70 also only has 2 levels of bass boost, on and off. I found that on was normally enough for me, but can become distorted if the volume is too loud. Which leads me to my next, and final complaint, which is that the volume is not as loud as my Sharp MT-821, but I found it adequate most of the time.
For me, though, these complaints are very insignificant when you look at the three main factors of this player: Size, weight and battery life.
I love this little guy,
I would recoomend this to anybody who thinks size is important (likewise with battery life and weight). THe only person I would not suggest this to is some one who really needs a lot of Bass Boost, because they might not find it adequate.
