| TheNihcman's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-E44 Personal MiniDisc Player |
When I went looking for a new MD player before the E90 came out, I chose the MZ-E44, because of many reasons. First, it looks cool. It has an “X” pattern that is similar to one of my other MD players, the MZ-EP11. I happen to think that the silver that I got it in is much better than the blue color.
The MZ-E44 is slightly larger than two minidiscs their cases, not including the hump that protrudes out of the shell. It protrudes about 3/8”, and contains the function buttons (e.g. play, next, stop, back, etc.). There is also a black rubber rim around the “equator” of the mindisc player to allow for a sleek look, and to add some stability and absorption if it were to fall.
I noticed that compared to my MZ-EP11 (before I got my E90), that the backlit remote provided a great deal of improvement, because my remote (MZ-RM35) is not backlit. However, like the EP11, the MZ-E44 does not have a digital display on the unit, and without the remote, one will be “flying blind,” such that they cannot see what track # or title or time of the song.
However, I noticed that there was not much of a battery life improvement over my EP11. With the supplied battery, the NH-9WM, the play time ranges from 6-8 hours; almost the same as my EP11.
Also, I noticed that although my EP11 also has a 10 second shock protection, the EP11 seems more resilient, because it does not skip at all. While I was running a two-mile circuit the other day, I noticed that my E44 skipped about five times. I had never known this because my EP11, which I usually use whenever I go running has never skipped.
As for recommending this product, I would only recommend it to those like me; those who are looking for a decent player at a low price (I bought mine on eBay for $110), or those who have home decks and/or portable recorders who do not wish to bring it anywhere. For those of you who are looking for a better bargain, and a lot better quality product, check out my epinion on the MZ-E90.
