| PenguinQX's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-EP11 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I first bought this MD Player off EBay for $100. It was within my price range, and was my first forage into MD Technology. This unit can now be bought for as cheap as $80 at a Sony retail outlet, or somewhere around $50 on EBay. The price is amazing if you compare it to the average discman.
My Overall Opinion:
This machine has served me very well. The sound quality is OUTSTANDING, and the bass settings hit the spot PERFECTLY. There are never any sound glitches during playback. The player does not skip when in my pocket while i walk. It's very durable as well; it survived an 6 foot drop onto solid concrete! Although light, the player maintains a sturdy feel with its METAL plated shell, and looks very sleek. The tube remote has a display that shows all the information you could need to know. It also has a clip that works very well and does has NOT gotten loose, even after a year of heavy use.
The Details:
The thickness of this unit is only SLIGHTLY thicker than the top of the line portable Sony MDs. It's not very heavy, but compared to the newer models out there, it does feel substantially heavier. It's also longer than the most MD players, giving it a rectangular look.
The 10 second skip is ample, although when i use it to run, it stills requires me to hold it with attention to keep it from moving excessively. I don't recommend this player for use during any running, jogging, or cycling.
Track location speed is excellent. Operation noise is minimal. The speed at which the player turns off is irksome. After hitting the stop/off button, the player takes approx 5 seconds to stop and power down.
There is absolutely NO display on this unit. Only 3 metal buttons on the top, accompanied by a red LED that indicates on/off. Two plastic sliding switches (HOLD and 2 setting BASS) are on the belly of the player, and there is nothing excepted an embossed "X" on the top. The lack of a display on the MD player is VERY inconvenient, as you can derive absolutely NO information w/o a remote.
To eject the minidisc, you simply push down a switch, and the MD pops out of the top of the unit. There's no door the comes up, simply a small lid that opens. Very space saving and super easy to use.
Takes 1 AA Battery, or a single rechargeable "gumstick" ni-cad battery that costs about $20 from Sony. Both provide only about 5-6 hrs of playback, which most people will find insufficient.
I highly recommend this for those people who simply want a cheap MD player that they can throw around that offers great quality at a LOW cost.
