I don't know where to start. Cablevision is a disgusting monopoly bent on placing the customer in his or her place... or at least the place where Cablevision feels the customer should be.
I subscribe to basic cable through Cablevision of Connecticut. I get approximately 80 channels for thirty-two dollars. Oh, and what wonderful eighty channels! I get the Home Shopping Network, News 12 Connecticut, EWTN, The Weather Channel and other wonderful channels!
In all seriousness, I do actually watch SciFi, The History Channel, and the networks.
The Picture
The picture quality is decent, if it does occasionally show signs of digital artifacting - the symptom of over-compressed channels where the cable backend's bandwidth can't handle it all.
Sound
My cable box seems to flatten the sound and negate any surround sound (I have a GFT 2200 w/ RCA outputs). As a consequence, I generally don't use the cable box.
Customer service
You just know that when reviewing Cablevision there has to be a section regarding customer service. These guys suck!
I have called customer service three times, and each time I have been rebuffed, treated like a child, and belittled.
I once called because I had to delay paying my bill for two weeks due to financial reasons (I had a family emergency that cost me quite a bit of money). The operator asked me to wait on hold while she asked her supervisor. I have a feeling she spent these ten minutes taking a coffee break and laughing about my naivete.
She came back and informed me that her supervisor would be scheduling disconnection for the next day. Oh, how wonderful! I'm stunned with your consideration and your kindness! I promptly asked if I could at least have until the next day to pay. Mind you that I was payed up to date, and it was for the last bill that I was asking an extension.
I was granted this considerable pardon and had to pay the entire ballance of $38.16 the next day. Not the largest deal, but obnoxious none the less. Money was tight that month and every little bit helped. Thank Cablevision for being so considerate.
Value
I can get satellite service for a lot less than I'm paying now with considerably more channels. Unfortunately, I do not have a purely southwestern line of sight, so I can't get satellite. I'm left with these idiots at Cablevision.
