Ok...I am going to confess. I seldom read my utility bill's before paying them. I vigorously review my credit card statements but have always just glanced at my utility statements and then cut a check. Paying bills is my least favorite chore and each month I approach it with nothing short of panic. I pile my bills, balance my checkbook from the previous months expenditures, and sit down anxiously to start writing checks and stuffing envelopes.
When Time Warner first took over my local cable company my first thought..was yeepeeeee! PAY PER VIEW!!!! We don't usually watch network TV so the thought of being able to choose a movie at whim was exciting. I still greatly enjoy PAY PER VIEW and the options that Time Warner provides. The issue I have with this company though is two fold.
Within 2 months of service I noticed I started to receive TV guide in the mail. Interesting...was my first thought...perhaps a gift from my mom. (Do not ever think this if you receive free subscriptions...read on)
I never read TV guide so it went straight from the mailbox to my garbage each month. After 7 issues I noticed on my cable bill a charge for a subscription to TV guide. I called the cable company and was told I had a responsibility to check my bill each month so I would not be credited for what I had previously paid for the subscription but that she would cancel it in the future. I was flabbergasted that they could just automatically subscribe for me and that it was my responsibility to tell them I DID NOT WANT IT rather than ordering IF I wanted it...seems kind of upside down to me.
The one lesson I learned was that every so often I really should read the itemizations on all of my bills and not just my credit card statements.
My second issue with Time Warner is that I continuously receive calls from them asking if I wish to buy or subscribe to something or add a tier to my service. After each such call I await my monthly statement to make certain they did not choose to subscribe for me anyway...
Anyway...don't say I didn't warn you.
