Charter has been my cable company for about 5 months now. They took over Bresnan and it has been down hill from the start. Living in an apartment building you really have no choice then to have cable. I had no cable and could get 3 local channels that did not come in very well at all.
Since Charter took over my monthly rate has gone up 10 dollars. Sure they added a few new channels to use as their reason for raising the monthly rate. You have your choice of getting the "Basic Service" This consists of your basic local channels for ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and FOX. They do throw in a few others like two C-span channels and QVC(shopping channel). You can also get the "Expanded Basic Service" for about 20 dollars a month more. This adds about 50 channels more to your cable. You can also pay for premium movie channels like HBO and Cinemax. That will cost you about 10 more a month for each of those. They offer two pay-per-view channels of course you need to have their cable box to see any of those movies. Most movies on pay-per-view cost 4 bucks each with special events costing anywhere from 10-50 dollars each.
When they raised the price of cable they added channels without even asking what I would like or if I wanted them. They have control of the market and know we really have no other choice then to subscribe to their service. They added the ever popular all golf channel(24 hours of golf programming) we also got the "Soap Net" channel(24 hours of non stop reruns of old soap operas). A couple of other worthless channels would be the Food channel and the 6 different all news channels, oh and lets not forget the Spanish channel. I am sure some people actually watch these once in awhile. I feel though we should have a choice in what channels we are receiving and shouldn't have to pay for those channels we NEVER watch.
I do enjoy watching television and some of the cable channels I watch often. I enjoy watching the Cubs play on WGN and the Braves on TBS. I also like watching sports on ESPN . I am sure many people would have no problem though losing the 4 ESPN channels they give us. A few other channels I enjoy are Sci-fi channel, USA Network and Nickelodeon(for the great comedies late at night). I can say though of the 70 plus channels Charter offers 30-40 I have never even watched once.
Charter knows they have all the control they can charge as much as they please. We pay the full amount no matter how many times cable goes out during storms and other unknown reasons. Also getting the cable guy to come on time never happens. They charge WAY to much for any servicing you may require. They also add to your monthly bill little service charges like Franchise Fee, Access Fee and FCC Regulation Fees. If you want to watch television and live in an area where without it you can't really see any channels at all, you have no choice then to get cable. It sure is NOT worth the monthly bills.
