LL Bean and MBNA - a good combination

Pros: I get LL Bean merchandise for buying what I already need
Cons: You don't want to carry the debt
The Bottom Line: I get gift certificates to LL Bean for using a credit card! Sounds like a good deal to me.

I have a Visa card and an American Express card. I know I need credit cards for various things in life - but think that I should get the best possible deal for myself while using these cards. Today I want to tell you about the MBNA LL Bean Visa card.
I have had this card for about six years. I use it fairly regularly. Each time I use it I earn a few cents towards an LL Bean gift certificate. (If I remember correctly it is 1% for non-LL Bean purchases and 3% for LL Bean purchases put on the card.) Since I am not an extravagant spender that means that I only get gift certificates for about $20 per year.
By now you are thinking "why bother?" and it is a good question so I'll answer it. I bother because the certificates aren't the only thing I get. With the MBNA LL Bean Visa I also get free shipping on all LL Bean merchandise. (That came in very handy when my sister and I bought floor lamps for my parents Christmas present one year.) I can also get free monograming on any LL Bean merchandise and the card is a no fee card.
Some people have mentioned the interest rate on this card and I have to admit it is high. My rate in July was 16.9%. However, when I called and asked them to lower my rate (it doesn't hurt to ask) they lowered it to 14.9%. Granted that is still pretty high and I called because I thought I might need the lower interest at one point but the fact is that I very rarely carry a balance on my cards so this interest charge isn't a problem for me.
I don't use my credit card a lot. I have one as a convenience to me and nothing more. Still, I figure if people want to give me something for using a card that I was going to use anyway - this one gives me a chance to save a little money at a store where I am going to shop anyway. For me it is a good deal all around.
