In my short life, I have already had quite a bit of exposure to credit cards and have some distinct favorites and least-favorites already. Among those that I rate as "somewhere in-between," are those issued by Citibank. I have had both a Citibank Visa and Mastercard, although I recently closed both accounts.
First, the pros about Citibanks' card services:
Excellent customer service...I never had any problem getting in touch with a customer service representative when I had a question or problem. On one occassion, my wallet was stolen and I had to call and cancel my cards. The customer service rep was friendly and efficient and quickly cancelled that account number and within the week, I had a new card. Also, the Citibank Visa and Mastercards are widely accepted, so there's little worry about going somewhere and not being able to use your credit card.
On the other hand:
There are other cards out there that offer much better interest rates and incentives. Despite the fact that I paid my bill on time every single month during the 4.5 years that I had my Citibank cards, I was never offered a better interest rate, even when I called and inquired about it.
Many other cards also offer higher credit lines (particularly Discover Platinum Card). Lastly, Citibank never offered low-rate balance transfers, something which I found helpfully from another credit card company while I was slowly trying to pay off my debts.
In closing, while credit card debt is never a good thing to get too deep in, it is sometimes inevitable, so you should be sure to shop around and get the most 'buying power' out of the credit card that you choose. And in my opinion, you're likely to find something better than Citibank.
