Cross Country Bank...Their website states they are "creating opportunities". Well they are in a way, but the opportunities are for them to make money from you!
Lets start with the fees:
For a $300 credit line you pay $50 up front. The application tells you credit lines up to $5000. When you actually get your card it is $300.
Then there is the $120 yearly fee. They say they will break it down into 12 installments. You would think that means $10 a month, but they will charge you twice on one statement. For example, I was charged $10 on 8/7 and $10 on 9/7 on the same statement.
But wait, there's more... They also charge you for every phone inquiry. Not call, inquiry. You get one free, which would be to check your balance. Want to check if a payment got there? That's inquiry #2, cha ching, $.50 added to your bill. Want to access anything else and you pay $.50 for each item. What a bargain.
Then there are the bill paying fees for online or phone payments! You need to do one of these because they mail your bills so late, you do not have time to put a check in the mail to get it there on time. And don't be late, that’s a $30 fee! They charge $3 to pay online, and $7 by phone.
If you go over your limit by $1, they add a $30 fee.
My card went over its limit because they added a service (without my knowledge) called Applied Advantage at a cost of $34.95. This service gives you checks for your account. Another bargain! If you do not reply to the offer, guess what, they sign you up. Love that small print!
When I called to cancel my card and pay off the balance, they charged me $7 again for a pay by phone transaction. Then gave me a credit for the Applied Advantage but that did not post until the next month, so they charged me another $10 for another months fee! How thoughtful!
I also want to mention the fact that I changed my address and it took four months for them to change it. I had to send in 3 change of address forms, which is on the back of the bill stub you send them. They never changed it. I had to call (no 800 number I may add) to get it changed. The bill for that call was $3.11
My advice is taking any other card except Cross Country. Go to Capital One or Even AMEX and get a secured card for $200 and start fresh. At least then you are not paying all these fees.
