| mrsbrady's Full Review: TCF National Bank Minnesota |
I opened my first and only checking account at TCF in 1993. I still have my account. Here are some highlight of the 14 year experience so far:
It was smooth sailing for a while. I never had a lot in the checking account, but always was very careful to write in all withdrawals and check my statements. One day I got a thin postcard (which anyone can read) saying my account was overdrawn. I went down to the local branch and the customer service rep, after telling me it must be an error on my part and I must not ever balance my account found out that a $20 check I had written had gone through as $200. No apologizes, just lots of excuses. All fees were reversed, at least.
We moved, and I made sure the bank got my new address. However, it wasn't "processed" in time, and I got a $4 charge for returned mail. When I asked if they could send it to the right address, they said it was shredded. So I asked if I could have another statement, and they said it would cost more money.
The worst ever was when I went to a Cub Foods branch to deposit cash from a recent garage sale I had. I counted up $545, and told her so. She counted it and I asked her what she got. I was sure she said $545. So I took the deposit slip, and looked at it on the way out to my car. It said $490!! I rushed back in, and the teller was really rude. She made a big scene saying she was right and now she'd have to close her register (which made all the people in the long line glare at me) to count her drawer. Surprise! Her drawer was over exactly the amount she shorted me. Again, no apologizes. I left in tears.
They do now have free online checking. What's amazing is the order they process items. The big expenses get cleared right away, while small $2 or $5 items will be "processing" for sometimes a week. They are just waiting, hoping you will go over. Each item you are over costs about a $38 fee (it goes up a dollar or two each month.) Deposits, even direct deposits take up to a week to process.
Why have I not changed banks? Good question. I have yet to find one that doesn't do all the same things!
Also, where are all these fees listed? Not on the website, not on the statements (with the exception of the overdraft fee). I was told I could NOT have a copy of the fees, that I was given one when I opened my account. (14 years ago!!)
