I just called them, the two states are Alaska and North Carolina. My dad served in Korea and I wouldn't qualify because the insurance (back then) was only offered to officers. So my dad would never have had the option for this insurance. And to think, he turned down two rank promotions. Nice going, pop.

About Medical (Reply to this comment)
by ihelp
Its true that medical insurance is a great asset when you have it, but the issue of using USAA Medical is that you do not have the restrictions that are applied to you when an accident happens. I doubt seriously that you, after an accident, would tell the ambulance guy can I go to County Medical because that is where I am covered at!" Medical Pay is an immediate pay service, its no fault coverage and it covers you in any car that you drive, are riding in, or get hit by on the street.. The Education Foundation of USAA has more information about all of our coverages so that you can read up on the benefits and uses.

The best thing going. (Reply to this comment)

My husband and I are insured through USAA courtesy of his dad and I love it. Interseting note to the restrictions, we weren't married yet when I was added to the insurance and the USAA rep told my now husband "You understand that she will always be eligible for coverage even if you split up." There me be a loop hole there. (But we haven't split up to test it.)

And an added bonus... (Reply to this comment)

to the extremely low premiums (the lowest I found during a recent cost comparison) is the usual year-end rebate. Always a nice surprise!
Thanks for the great review-

A few clarifications.... (Reply to this comment)
by Zski
Nice review. I agree.
Eligibility for USAA auto insurance is extended only to those in the military _or_ those who are related to a USAA member. If you are related to a veteran who is not (and has never been) a USAA member, you're out of luck.
The rumors that they are opening to the general public are almost definitely not true. That being said, there are very few states where USAA is legally obligated to insure anyone who asks to be insured. I don't know which those are, though.

They all should be like USAA (Reply to this comment)
by ElaineP8
As a Navy brat I was insured by USAA when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. Then I married an Air Force officer. Whenever I heard stories about people having trouble with their insurance "agent" or having to do legwork to deal with another insured I just didn't understand it. Generally, with USAA all it took was one phone call and it was a done deal. They've never bent me over; currently I have 5 motor vehicles and a horse trailer insured with them. One of the cars is a DeLorean; they only charge me about $350/year, incuding collision. How good a deal is that? Given that you can't bondo-and-paint a stainless steel car, all I'd need is a minor parking lot ding to justify a year's premiums.
Good review.
