SonicXtreme's Full Review: Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast
Oh man. Sega did it again. In probably the biggest hyped Dreamcast game to come out at launch, along with thousands of fans from his genesis games, Sonic Adventure had some hefty expectations to live up to. And it did to every one of them.
Sonic Adventure is a 3D Action/Adventure game taken place in the Sonic universe. You start out the game with only one character to play as, Sonic, then as you meet up with other friends in the story (6 playable characters in all, not including 2 versions of Sonic :)) they become playable. The most unique thing about Sonic Adventure is that as you go through the game with different characters, some will meet up and help each other in the story. The only negative about this is that you will watch some cutscenes 3 or 4 times (with each character that participates in them) which can get pretty boring by the 3rd time. However the plus's completely overshadow the negatives in this game.
While playing SA, there are 2 types of levels. Adventure and action levels. Action levels are, well, regular levels like you'd expect in any game, but the adventure adds quite a bit to the game. Adventure levels (there's 3 in all) are where most of the story happens. While exploring adventure levels (which are mostly cities), you might run into a cutscene, but you'll rarely run into a boss encounter. It is also here where you can find "powerups" for your character, such as the lure enhancements for Big.
What gives SA the extraordinary replay value is that even though there are technically only 10 levels, each is a different experience with each character. The action levels offer different objectives depending upon who you are playing as. With Sonic, its just "get to the end of the level". With Tails, it's beat Sonic to the Emerald of the level. With Amy its get to the end of the level. With Knuckles its, well, I don't want to spoil the story for you. With E-102 it's to destroy the boss at the end of the level. Finally, in a strange twist, with Big the Cat you have to catch a frog in each level (by fishing for him!).
Also, Sonic Adventure is the first console game to support online capabilities. What you can do online is truly unique ranging from downloading a free racing level, to decorating Station Square with Christmas lights and trees! There is almost always a contest here ranging from who can get the highest score on level X to who can get the fastest time on the snowboarding minigame.
All in all, Sonic Adventure was in my opinion, the best launch game for the Sega Dreamcast and to this day still is the best Dreamcast game. Plus it's one of the "Sega All-Stars" games now which means it's retailed for only $15-$20!
Bottom Line: Unless you hate Sonic with a passion, buy this game now!
