| supahonda's Full Review: Harvest Moon 2 for Game Boy Color |
[UPDATE] I have added a bit more information and I have taken out parts here and there.
Harvest Moon 2 for Game Boy Colour is simply an amazing game. Almost everything about it is perfect and the game is extremely fun. I found Harvest Moon 2's simple, yet addictive game play to be a much needed wakeup call, taking me away from those graphically stunning, boring game play games.
Harvest Moon 2 starts off with you naming your character. You learn that the mayor is going to turn the farm down the road into a parking lot. This is when you come running in, explaining that you can save the farm. The mayor decides that three years is an adequate amount of time to turn the farm around. The rest of the game follows your character as he plants, waters and harvests plants to make enough money to upgrade the farm. But that's not it! You can also raise cows, chickens and sheep, build a greenhouse and grow flowers, interact with the town’s people and collect new tools! You can also repair your tools and when they are broken, you can get new and improved tools that make your job much easier.
Although this is an amazing game, I found it lacking in some departments. I have played the PlayStation versions of Harvest Moon, and I have found that there are many other features other than farming that can keep you interested. You can get married, have kids, and much much more. But not in this version. I think you have to sacrifice quantity for portability, but this didn't really bug me, as people with the PlayStation version would have a much harder time hauling that around where-ever they go!
Game play
The game play is extremely simple and I managed to learn the game in a matter of seconds. Although the game play may be simple, it is extremely addictive! Basically, all you do in the game is harvest plants, milk cows and collect chicken eggs, trying to make money. You first plant seeds, then water them, then wait, then harvest them. You do this everyday, 7 days a week. This may sound boring, but I never got bored and the game has kept me interested, even six months after I bought the game.
Graphics
This game is on Game Boy Colour, so don't expect stunning graphics. The graphics in this game are average, but they suit the simple game play so well, you don't even notice! Many colours are used, taking advantage of the hardware, and all the vegetables, fruits and basically every object is detailed and looks great. Many people won't even play a game if the graphics aren't top of the line, but once you get into the game, you won't even notice! You will be having so much fun playing! THe backgrounds are all fairly detailed, but once again, nothing that really is ground breaking or will make you stare open mouthed.
Sound
Well, what can you expect from a Game Boy Colour game? The music is just bad midis, but once again, that doesn't take away from the game at all. The music is fairly addictive (like the game), and I feel that I'm humming them all the time.
All of the sounds are comically exaggerated, but you can tell what they are, and some of the sound effects are even fun! Everything sounds fairly realistic (watermelons splat like they are supposed to, etc...) and I really have nothing to complain about!
Fun Factor
While it may seem like a fairly boring game, Harvest Moon 2 is a simple, funny, addictive game. It is very rewarding to see your farm grow as you build it up, and overall, it is a very satisfying experience. Basically, this is one fun game that kept me happy on the road for countless hours on end.
Also, watching your animals grow and taking care of them is very rewarding and also adds greatly to the overall fun factor of this game.
Overall
Overall, this is a great portable game that is simple, yet fun. It is perfect for all ages, as there is no swearing, blood or sexual references. It is also perfect for older people who just want a fun way to relax at night. I personally think that this is the best "Old Person" game since Tetris! I highly recommend it for your next gift to anyone with a Game Boy Colour!
