The shelves are full of exciting and challenging games for the Nintendo 64 home entertainment system, but one that even Dad can enjoy is Super Smash Bros.
Our children have a large selection of games for their system and upon arriving home from work and after fighting both the traffic and my schedule, I am again challenged to the daily question. Dad, do you want to play Nintendo ? Okay, is my usual response, but since purchasing Smash Bros.…I actually enjoy playing.
Once you slice the cellophane off this little cartridge, you will find that you have the standard Nintendo trademark players such as Mario,Pikachu,Fox,Link, Yoshi and a few others. In order to earn more players you need to first play against the computer and actually beat the computer. This was easy for me to accomplish since I requested that the experts take on this challenge.
Currently, we have earned eight characters on our system and truly the experts have tried to gain others, but to no avail. My main guy is Mario and the reason is that I have learned all his moves. Yes, each of the characters has different moves from Donkey Kongs ground pound to Kirby’s suction action. Game play can take place is several different lands from Yoshi’s land to Foxes battleship.
I enjoy playing the “free for all” games as this is where the challenges take place. Upon selecting your character and then choosing a land, the battle begins.
In “free for all” it is you against up to three other players and it is up to you and your character to battle the other players. During this play, you can accomplish both technical knockouts and absolute knockouts. If you are knocked out, it is okay, as you will arrive back into the game from the heavens above. Once you complete your timed game, the winner is chosen by having the least knock outs and/or TKO’s. There are even sudden death challenges for those who have ended in an exact tie.
All this talk about “death” and “knock outs” is really a little exaggerated. This game does NOT contain any blood or body parts to scare the kids, it is truly very comical. I will caution you that if you feel that the content of fighting is not for your children, then you may wish to not introduce this to your children. In my opinion, the scenes and subject matter are no more violent than watching a Tom and Jerry cartoon in which Tom is hit with a frying pan.
Since the kids enjoy having Dad play their games, I am the first to admit that Dad enjoys this game. I also admit that sometimes while driving home, I am thinking about how my little Mario can beat Pikachu.
