Doom, the first real “shoot ‘em up game”. This game can be summed up in one sentence: Run around, shoot guys, pick up stuff. That’s it. So why is it so entertaining?!!! I admit, the first time I played this game (It was the first 3D game I ever played) I fell out of my chair while trying to duck a fireball!
So what’s the big difference between Doom 1 and Doom 2? Doom 2 has new levels, new enemies, and one new weapon. The graphics in Doom 1 and 2 are nothing special, while in their day they were the best, they are pretty bad in comparison to the newer games. The sound is pretty much the same way. While game play is not particularly bad, you can not jump, duck, swim, etc.
No doubt the biggest draw back to the game play is the inability to freelook. This means that you cannot point the gun at any point on the screen, you can only point parallel to the ground. When shooting at enemies above or below you, you have to rely on the game to correct the elevation of the gun... and that does not always work. For example, when shooting with the rocket launcher at a guy above you who is moving, it is necessary to aim at a point ahead of him in order to account for the time the rocket will be in the air. Well, since the enemy is not directly in front of you the game will not correct the elevation of the projectile, and the rocket will hit too low.
This is a fun game to play networked or single player. While it’s not much compared to games like Quake 2, everyone should play it at least once.
