tds01's Full Review: Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer for Window...
Sigh! Let me give you some background. I started playing this series from the 3rd game. Going back in time even further, I played all of the Bards Tale Games which started this genre.
Might and Magic series has been good - and they found a formulae and have stuck to it. And stuck to it.. And then stuck to it some more.
Enough. Guys! Time to update your game engine. What passed as great a few years ago is now getting stale. Perhaps if you are relatively new to the Might and Magic series, it is still enough to draw you in. But if you are a long term fan - it feels like we are being neglected. There are not enough changes or improvements to each new version coming out.
That being said - these games are enjoyable if you love customising a party of adventurers, and then building them up to a powerful band of heroes. The class system is quite advanced since game 5 onwards, satisfying those AD&D people out there who want a bit of a challenge. The skill points distribution system is also quite balanced, with level required before gaining particular skills. After so much experience, 3DO do know their stuff as far as character development.
The storylines are good - they should be as they are the only changes alot of these games have. There is a non-linear storyline for most of the game - with sub missions you can take or leave.
Overall, a good game, which will keep you interested for a long time. There is alot of support on the Internet, from maps, suggestions and hints, to just plain cheats (for those who cheat .. Bah Humbug)
Like killing dragons and building characters - give it a go. Also go back and try the last couple as well.
