Tsilva25's Full Review: Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer for Window...
The game LOOKS great, it SMELLS great, but is it great? I dunno..
I should preface this by saying I'm a huge Computer RPG fan. I've played every single Comptuer RPG released (ah, well, uh.. well, pretty darn close!). I have played and conquered every M&M game out there so I feel like a bit of an expert in this field.
I really should have warmed up to this game, but I just never did. Part of it had to do with the story line, which involved, of course, saving the existence of mankind. But, for some reason, this time your allies aren't Kings or Queens or even Gods.. but, um.. Merchant's Guilds. I don't know about you but there aren't many merchant guilds that I'd risk dragonflames over..
On one hand, I found the class selection to be extremely compared to earlier versions. On the positive side, I found that the classes that *were* available were very interesting: Vampire, Dark Elf, Minotaur, etc., and some of the classes that can join you along the way are interesting as well.
The rest of the game, what I call the "meat and potatoes", is unremarkable. If you've played an M&M game since the 3rd one, you know the drill:
1) Subquest, subquest, subquest, fetch, fetch, fetch, kill, kill..
2) Movie.
3) See Number 1.
This needs to change, hell it HAS to change. There needs to be much more story line to move things along rather than a hack-and-slash fest. Also, if 3D0 is listening, PLEASE UPDATE THE GAME ENGINE! It was cool in MM6, somewhat ok in MM7, but now I feel like all that's being done is some quests are being redesigned, some new pretty faces, and off you go. It's time for a new face and a new interface for the future of this series.
Also, I felt that most of the time my characters were just walking backpacks, seeing how many useless items they can squeeze in, hoping that the next weapon deals out maybe (if we're lucky) 4 more points of damage to justify actually tossing what you are already using. And how about fire weapons vs. acid or electricity or cold? Sheesh! I think the system should be toned down a bit. Running stats/resistances/etc/ to 255 is silly. I think percentages (0-100, 100 being the highest absolutely possible for a living creature) makes things much easier to relate to!
Now, the tech side. The game runs pretty quickly, loading times are minimal, saving times are very fast. No MAJOR crashes, bugs, etc, and I find that 3D0 is pretty conscientious about updates, not to mention their very easy-to-use online updating program.
In a nutshell, the game can be a lot of fun if you're looking for somewhat of a no-brainer. It's eye candy at least, but I think that 3D0 is really going to have to make sure their output matures and appeals to audiences that are craving more substantial gaming. I won't go as far as to say I don't recommend this game, but if it's between eating for a week and buying MM8, I'd find the nearest sushi bar.
