mjr1138's Full Review: Rogue Spear Mission Pack: Urban Operations for Win...
Ahhhh!! I love the smell of Video Games in the morning!
There's nothing in the world like firing up a game of Red Storm's Rogue Spear: Urban Operations with five or six buddies after a hard days work.
My fellow co-workers and I have been big fans of Red Storm's Rainbow Six line of games from the beginning. With Rogue Spear we saw an amazing improvement in movement, missions, weapons, and especially artificial intelligence.
Rogue Spear: Urban Operations is a mission pack for Rogue Spear. The new mission pack offers several new missions, as well as new weapons and some additional features. All new missions are available in Multiplayer games, and definitely add to the flexibility of Multiplayer scenarios. These new boards are amazing. Maps like The Streets of Venice, Turkish Bazaar, and The Storage Depot offer spectacular new areas to defend and also feature spectacular map textures, and environment variables.
The game play has not changed much, but the artificial intelligence shown by the Rebels, and Terrorists is magnificent! Terrorists will not only follow you, but will intelligently hide, and then sneak up after you. Not to mention their amazing aim on high difficulty levels.
One "feature" of the game I don't find too enjoyable occurs after you have been shot. Before this upgrade, you would continue to move normally, able to take the pain and keep on going. Now, your view is violently jerked upward, as you cringe from being hit. This makes it amazingly difficult to run away while being pummeled with round after round. The moment you gain control of your view, you'll most likely be hit again, and have to recover.
While this feature adds to the realism the game offers, it gets quite annoying after a while, but once used to it, most players are able to recover while trying to duck for cover.
For beginner to intermediate level players the new weapons added to the game are a bit more difficult to use, making them somewhat disappointing for newer players. But as a player gets more advanced, turning to weapons like the SAW for added fire power(200 rounds in seconds!!) can be devastating for opponents. Other weapons though are simply not as good as some already included in the games previous versions. Each new weapon though can have its advantage depending on the specific scenario. The SAW as I mentioned above has excellent accuracy when crouched but, while standing its much hard to land a hit on your opponent.
I'm a huge fan of the new AW Covert rifle. The Covert is a fantastic new Silenced sniper rifle, offering three levels of zoom and pinpoint accuracy. For the player who loves to take out an opponent without a trace from across the board, this is easily the best way to go.
Early beta versions of the game offered an exciting new utility weapon, proximity mines. Unfortunately for several reasons, the most glaring being that they crashed the game when they exploded, they didn't make it into the final version. Bummer!
The game also features all levels available to the user from previous installed games. Multiplayer games can be played on old maps from Rainbow Six, as well as all Rogue Spear maps. Offered on top of single player scenarios are game options, like Lone Wolf which allow you to play as a single soldier sent in to wipe out all terrorists. This is a fantastic feature for those players who found it difficult to manage keeping teammates alive while playing the single player scenarios.
Multiplayer is still my favorite type of game to play, and with MPlayer and MSN Gaming Zone setup its easy to find someone to play against, or with if no friends are around.
Overall a great mission pack, to a spectacular game. Go get it now!
