Cons: Characters act like idiots, lack of violence seriously hampers gameplay, byzantine and excessive puzzles.
The Bottom Line: Don't buy it. Timeline takes all the book's inconsistancies and multiplies them. Most computers won't be able to keep up with the complex graphics.
Michael Crichton is my favorite author, and Timeline is probably my second favorite book. But the Timeline game is just so irredeemably bad that there is no hope for salvation.
You play a team of... people sent back in time to 14th century France rescue their... professor. Or a professor. We really don't know. He's a professor, that's for sure. The game is extremely bad with portraying character relations.
With your slightly retarded and unbelievably well-endowed assistant Kate (both of which pay extremely horrible service to the book, which portrays Kate as a genius but a little rugged and harsh), you brazenly rush around the town of Castlegard, ticking off the local lord Oliver de Vannes while trying to rescue your professor.
There is voice acting, but its rare - fortunately, the subtitles allow you to understand what they're saying. The graphics are decent when they aren't glitching (and they will, at least once - most often, you'll notice that Kate's face is a blank white canvas).
You're given the opportunity to fight with swords and bows-and-arrows and such, but the lack of bloodshed really makes the game... stupid. I'm not all for senseless slaughter, but there isn't even a sound when your sound connects with an enemy. And you really don't even kill your enemies - you fight them till they surrender. Blah.
THE GAME IS 30 MINUTES LONG. That is its most notable flaw. And those few 30 minutes seem to be little more then trying to pass a few deceptively simply traps that are outright dumb. Play it a second time and you'll beat it in 25 minutes tops.
Overall, the game is unremarkable and a pitiful waste of money. See the upcoming movie and hope it isn't as bad.
