mspixie's Full Review: Um Jammer Lammy for PlayStation 1
Everyone wants to be a Rock Star. It is the single perfect job. You wear extremely cool clothes with lots of sparkles, you get to be really loud, you are treated like royalty, you make millions for doing really very little, and people everywhere are on a first-name basis with you. However, with the job description comes the drug abuse, the random sex, the criticism, and the final appearance on Behind the Music. Avoid all of those downsides with Um Jammer Lammy, the only Playstation Game that can hold my attention for longer than half an hour without driving me to tears of frustration first.
My dad is obsessed with racing games, which tick me off in a matter of minutes because I just keep losing. My sister loves role-playing games, which I think are weird and just plain dumb. Um Jammer Lammy is a whole new genre of video game, a skill game in which the player also needs style to win. It's fascinating and addictive.
Lammy is the frontwoman for an all-girl rock band. She's a little absent-minded, and not only is she late for her gig, but she has also lost her guitar. Your job is to get Lammy to her show by completing different songs in different locations, using various guitar substitutes. At each level, the main singer of each song will show you a riff using the different control buttons (circle, square, triangle, x, right and left) and you must repeat that riff to earn points and continue through the song.
As you play, you are rated from Awful to Bad to Good to your ultimate goal, Cool. You must complete each level with a Good score and, if you achieve Cool status, you will be given a chance to up your pointage with a solo jam session.
There are only a few levels in the game, but the type of music varies from level to level. One of my favorites is the second level, a soulful funk groove. There is also a rockabilly level and even a heavy metal section in which you must master Metallica-like power chords.
After you pass the first level, you can try to defeat the levels with a partner or go head to head against your partner in sort of "Dueling Lammies" deal. I whipped my sister at this, but she just reminded me of all those times she's pounded me at the Jedi Battles. I just sniffed and retorted with a killer riff, upping my score and subtracting from hers. Who says sibling rivalry isn't fun?
The only problem with Um Jammer Lammy is that you MUST learn the controls by heart in order to succeed with a Cool rating. If you confuse circle for x and square for triangle, you will fail miserably. You must also have a good musical ear and sense of rhythm. You can't just press the buttons as fast as you can, you must follow the beat.
Otherwise, Um Jammer Lammy is a cool, fun game for Playstation that is probably a lot better than being a Rock Star in real life.
