rasputin's Full Review: Swing Away Golf for PlayStation 2
I picked this up on a lark to play with my family over the Christmas break, since it can take up to four players in stroke play (normal golf). It was a lark rental, and I expected to just play a few rounds and return it. Instead I got drawn into a great game that I couldn't stop playing, and went on to buy a copy of at the end of the rental.
What makes Swing-Away stand out? First is its variability-- You can play single player, you can play multi-player. You can play stroke or match play, you can play in a campaign-style "story mode" that lets build up a character and gain experience and money to buy goodies with. For a golf game it has an awful lot of depth.
The gameplay is fairly easy and has a low enough learning curve that even someone with no real golf know-how can get a handle on it fairly quickly. (as my mom, an avid non-golfer in a family of golfers was able to demonstrate) A few simple button presses are all it takes to execute fades and draws, change clubs, or rotate the camera around. It's pretty rewarding when you are doing well too, a well hit drive sounds like a rocket when it leaves the tee, and little sparkly trails follow the ball as it tears down the fairway. Yes, it's a cartoony looking game, but it's still a pretty satisfying feeling.
The graphics are, as I just said, a little cartoony, but it suits the feel of the game, sort of a laid-back golf game. A lot like how I play real golf. You just feel like you should have a cooler full of beers waiting on your cart. Sound is wonderful, with one real exception; the caddies. Actually the caddies sound great too, but sometimes the caddies can be a little abrasive ("Did you aim to the right?" when I hooked one shot, about caused me to have an aneurysm) which can be discouraging to folks who are just learning the ropes.
Overall, I can give this game great marks. It's entertaining, easy to learn and all around wonderful to play. If you are looking for engaging story and RPG's look elsewhere, but if you want to kick back with some friends and play some golf, this is your game.
