nerys's Full Review: Age Of Empires II: Conqueror 2.0 for Windows, Mac
Its Mine! I drooled over this and finally got it with my Christmas bonus, nothing better then a gift certificate to a local mall. Talk about being happy.
I am a huge fan of the original AoE and of the AoE2, that's no secret, so I was excited about the release of this addition.
It adds several new campaigns, civilizations and techs. What I like is the wider variety of things, such like the turkeys that you collect playing the Aztecs, since as anyone knows that sheep weren't in the "New World" until it was "found." I also like the missionaries - monks on donkeys, for they convert enemies faster, though they cannot pick up the relics nor do they heal quite as fast. The conquistadors are pains to kill off however when you are playing said Aztecs...
I really enjoy the optional features of the campaigns. I thought it was fun to collect horses to create mounted riders for the Aztec campaign. It provides more interaction with the events of the campaigns then the original did.
I enjoy the history lessons that this game provides. I knew that Spain had a large Moslem population, but never understood why until playing this game. I just finished the El Cid campaign which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I think the best thing about it is the improvement of the villagers. You can build your collection point, such as the lumber camp and they will then start to collect the resources automatically upon completion of the building. I always had a tendency to forget about them... I also really like the farm queue - the choice to have them automatically rebuild farms, also nice when you are having wood problems to set aside some wood for the farms when you have a little to spare. The El Cid campaign has spots where wood is really scarce.
One thing I absolutely do hate is the handling of the menus. I really don't know how to describe it but to say that when you mouse-over a menu selection, it pops up a description of what it is, which isn't so bad, but it puts the price of things higher up in the screen, right where it gives you battle warnings, which irritate me too since you can hear and see that in the map in the corner, so if you cannot remember how much things are you cannot see them until after the battle warning passes. The descriptions are dumb and really not needed. One Example: Raises Monk hit points so they are harder to kill. Duh... that's what raising hit points mean...
