Noa_Star's Full Review: Azurik: Rise of Perathia for Xbox
I’ll start off by saying that some people will love Azurik. At its core, it is a 3rd person slasher. It’s a very simplistic style of game that became popular with the Legacy of Kain series. If you’re into Soul Reaver you probably will like this game.
Within three days of buying this game, I sold it to EB for $25 and cut my losses. Yes, it’s that bad. First lets talk about story. Okay there really isn’t much of one. Put simply, a bad guy scattered some important stuff so you have to go find it. It really isn’t much more involved than that. You’ll notice that it is presented as almost being an RPG, but lacks elements that could have really helped it. You can visit towns, but instead of being able to actually interact with the people, they mutter monotonous phrases and serve as scenery.
Gameplay had potential. A unique system was made to allow you to charge elemental powers into your staff weapon quickly. Unfortunately the actual battle moves are simple and few. You really just smash the attack button over and over for hours on end. Gameplay is further hindered by a horrible camera angle. The camera is never where you needed and makes the most challenging aspect of the game crossing bridges. You really can’t ever get a total fix on where your character is. Believe me, after killing scores of pointless monsters, falling off a bridge a dozen times gets really annoying.
The environments of Azurik are vast. The worlds are huge and the draw distance is impressive. Large worlds in Azurik aren’t necessarily a good thing though. If you considered running around killing the same bad guys in DOOM exploring, then I guess this will count too. I however find exploration a lot more fun when it’s not the same thing over and over in new locations.
Talking about exploring brings me to the graphics. Water is simply beautiful. There is a side-by-side shot of a waterfall and lavafall that is just amazing. Azurik himself is animated impressively too. Many monsters and textures however are clearly below par for the Xbox’s power.
I’m going to try and go easy on this game. It’s the first ever that I’ve sold back to the store for being so bad, but I think some people will like killing the same things with simple button smashing in new places for hours on end. Personally, I couldn’t take it.
