Several of my friends and I are budding chef wannabees. We invite each other over for dinner parties and try to wow and out do the others with our culinary skills. With that in mind, it was not surprise (and indeed a great delight) to me when my husband bought me the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer for my birthday. Unlike some women I know who would cringe at the thought of getting such a utilitarian gift, I was psyched. It was a new toy to add to my collection of kitchen tools, and it was cool. It was big. It was shiny. It was black onyx. I quickly cleared a place of honor for it on my countertop. My friends came over and ooohed and aaahed over it as if it were a new baby.
I LOVE MY MIXER!!!!!
Here's why:
Look Ma, No Hands!
Probably the greatest feature of the Kitchen Aid standing mixer is that you do not need to hold the mixer, like most portable mixers. Instead, you simply put your ingredients in the mixing bowl, lower the mixing head, and let it run. I make a lot of fresh whipped cream, which can take several minutes to whip up - this is a great feature, as it allows me to do other things while the mixer does the work.
The same principle applies to kneading dough. By using the dough hook, you simply put your dough in and let the machine do all the work.
Power
This baby has power. Before I owned the Kitchen Aid mixer, I would run my hand mixer nearly until the motor burned out in order to make large batches of batter. With the Kitchen Aid mixer, you can easily make double or triple batches of batter without stressing the motor.
What I Don't Like
Not much - two things I would warn a potential buyer about. First, do not make the same mistake I did and throw away your hand mixer. You will still need that for smaller jobs, where using the Kitchen Aid is impractical. Second, the machine is bulky and heavy, so it really helps to put it in a spot where you can use it without having to move it around.

Prices
The Kitchen Aid Mixer in the basic colors sells for around $290. The special finishes come with a hugely inflated price tag - I have seen them up to $500.00. You can get them cheaper if you look around. Our local Sam's club had them in stock for awhile for around $220. They are readily available on ebay and typically sell for around $150.00
Attachments
A variety of different attachments are available for use with the mixer. They include: a slicer/shredder, a food grinder, a juicer, a pasta maker, and a sausage stuffer. The attachments range in price from around $25 - $100. With all the attachments your mixer can replace your food processor.
