firebird1's Full Review: iHome Nxt Speaker Case Blue (IHM12L)
When I came across the iHome I thought it was simply a case. I thought that it would be great for my old Ipod 2nd generation because there are so few accessories made just for it anymore. When I found out that it had builtin speakers powered by 2 tiny AAA batteries I was pleasantly surprised.
I love the Ihome speaker case. As a case it meets and exceeds my expectations. I work in a warehouse moving objects that weigh anywhere from 50-150 pounds so I was worried that, as sturdy as my 2nd gen Ipod was, It was going to get damaged. The case is padded inside and out and has held up perfectly over the time I have used it. The case fits in my pocket but I have large pockets. Its dimensions are about 6x4x2 inches making it far from the smallest case for a mp3 player but my ipod is not tiny either. Having builtin speakers makes up for its size.
When I do not want to use the builtin speaker I can easily disconnect the earphone style connector from the ipod and connect a pair of earbuds or earphones and just not zip up the unit all the way. This makes it convenient when I want to listen to music that might not thrill everyone around me. (classical or barbershop quartet for example) The styling reminds me a bit of the cases offered for gameboy advance and other handheld game systems or of a padded eyeglass holder. Kind of a hard/soft case.
The only thing that would make this better is if it gave you access to the mp3 player controlls without having to open it. I have seen where iHome makes units that have this feature but they are even larger than this one. So I think the tradeoff is worth it to keep it pocketable.
Also I have only bought one set of batteries and so far they have lasted all week. Wish my Ipod could go as long without a recharge.
