| ostensibly's Full Review: Long Lake Camp |
I worked as a staff member at Long Lake and was amazed at how terrible the administration was. I attended camps as a child and teenager and then went on to be a staff member. When I arrived at Long Lake, I had very positive memories of camp and camp staff. Long Lake's director was horrible. He put on a good front in the beginning - trying to win the staff over, but ultimately, 97% of the staff abhored him by August. A full 40% of the staff quit over the summer - all with the same basic gripe: the director is anti-art and creativity. I was actually told by the director, "You aren't here to teach art, you are here to babysit rich kids." If it wasn't for the other wonderful counselors and teachers + the wonderful kids, I believe most of the staff would've fled by July. As I stated above, I had been a lifelong camper and then a counselor and Long Lake was terrible - a real soul-destroying experience for the staff. There must be some truly wonderful arts camps out there - this isn't one of them. Money is the bottom line here - the title should be 'Long Lake Camp for Profit' --- it's sort of strange that the director of an arts camp doesn't create art.
