There are a lot of stupid television shows out there. A lot of shows out there call themselves funny, but either leave you snoring, or leave you saying “Am I supposed to be laughing right now”.
A lot of comedies simply aren’t funny. Mad TV is NOT one of these types of shows, as it is darn funny..at least in my opinion.
What makes this show so funny is that they don’t care who they offend. The show almost ends up being politically correct as instead of picking on just minority groups, they make fun of EVERYONE, and EVERYTHING.
They make fun of current events. A lot of political headlines end up being slammed on this show. I can’t count how many times they made fun of former president Bill Clinton and his affair with Monica. They even had one skit where Monica was selling handbags, bragging how her bags were made especially by you for the future Mrs. Clinton, then Bill interrupts saying how he wants Monica to be remembered for her bags….not that other thing.
They also make fun of other things, such as social issue, everything to rude people, to well, pretty much anything.
The show also features a lot of guest stars just like its arch-rival SNL.
A lot of these guest stars are of the musical type. I remember how excited I was when they announced that Bush (The band, not the president) would be a guest star! Needless to say I was psyched. Being the only song on their latest album that was any good, they played The Chemicals Between Us. Mad TV always try to get decent musical guest stars. They try to get people who are popular at the time to perform on their show!
Other stars they have had as quests are Nelly, Snoop, Outkast, Incubus, Everclear, Creed, and KISS.
They also like to feature a lot of non-musical guests. My jaw almost dropped to the floor when I saw Jerry Springer on the show. I wasn’t shocked that he was on there so much as to the fact that he was on there, and they were making fun of his show. They had a skit of the Jerry Springer show, and two of the shows guests were talking about this women named Rosa, and how she was saying that Jerry has no talent. Jerry ended up attacking the guest! He also ended up with a makeover while doing his “final thought”.
Other guests they have had include Tony Hawk, Regis Philbin, Tom Green, George Carlin, and many others. Again, they always try to find guest stars that will be able to in some way, make a skit funny.
The thing that I really like about Mad TV is the characters. It has some of the funniest characters I have even seen. They have numerous ones that have skits with them in it here and there, and they are drop-dead funny.
One of them is Will Sasso (on of the cast members of Mad TV) as Stephen Segal. Now, I have no clue as to why the producers choose to slam Segal, but they do a good job of it. One skit had Stephen talking about his new idea called Stephen Segal Letter Box 2000. This product not only showed what would normally be cut out when transferred to video in standard format, but also shows the stage crew on both sides of the actors. In every skit where they slam Segal, they always have him snapping people’s necks, even people who did not d anything. Although while this kind of humor is in somewhat bad taste, I still find it funny.
Another character I love is Loraine. Loraine is a slightly older lady, and is really annoying. The person she annoys is always the same person, a tall, slender man, who always has to put up with Loraine, and usually ends up quitting his job, or loosing sleep over her. One skit had Loraine go into a buffet. The slender man was the cashier, and she tried to pay with nickels. However, Loraine ended up looking at the buffet, putting her head UNDER the sneeze guard, and started coughing on the food. This may sound stupid, but it is more funny than it sounds.
Stuart, a 20 or 30 some year old who still has his hand held by hi smother is also funny. The same lady who plays Lorraine (Mo Collins) plays Stuarts mom, and Stuart is played by the same guy who plays the tall, slender man (Mike McDonald), that Loraine annoys. He is always getting yelled at by his mother, and always seems to pick food he find o the ground, and starts to eat it. Again, this sounds stupid..but it quite funny at times.
The Vancome Lady is very rude..and very funny as well. She is the type who, if had a gun to her head, would make fun of the way the person is holding the gun. She likes to pick on everyone, and is just darned funny. I especially thought this one skit where they had her greeting (and making fun of) all the shows guests. I always did get annoyed by who won awards at award shows, let alone who they interview, so this skit struck me as particularly hilarious.
Stabs at Rosie are also an occasional treat. One skit had Rosie (not really her) having Oprah on her show. Rosie showed Oprah a bit from a film she was in about Marilyn Monroe. Oprah pointed out that she didn’t know Marilyn had period where she gained all that weight and that the film was on “Lifetime..the all women network”. Rosie then started to attack Oprah. They even take time to attack Rosie’s famous phrase “Cutie Pattotie”. The skit with Howard Stern slamming Rosie was even funnier.
I really love the writing on this show. They never cease to amaze me, and never cease to make me hit the floor with laughter. I must warn you, some may be offended by some of the stuff they play, however, you aren’t the only one they will offend, so don’t feel to bad about it.
I can’t believe the show has five emmy nominations. They are in wardrobe, makeup, hair, art direction, and opening title. I can see why they are up for these, but I am shocked they didn’t at least get one nomination for writing. I mean come on…some of their skits are stupid, but most of them are hilarious.
Overall this is a funny show, and anyone who loves to laugh, and is not easily offended should at least give it a try.
By the way, despite what Epinions seems to think this is NOT a kids show like the category suggests!
