| docjohn99's Full Review: The Waldorf=Astoria? |
There are three ART DECO gems in NYC, Rockefeller Center - The Chrysler Building and The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. All were built within a few years during the 1930's.
My family stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (actually we were guests at The Waldorf Towers, a "hotel within the hotel") for a week (July 2000) and had the Best Time of Our Lives!
It always seemed like "home" when you stepped inside the Park Avenue entrance, even though the opulent lobby was so huge - it was always inviting.
Of course we lucked out and our reservation for a room on the concierge level was UPGRADED (because they had no room with 2 DBL beds) to the Waldorf Towers (we were guests on the 40th floor out of 42 floors total) - only paid $235 a night (plus all the taxes!). They provided a KING size bed and a "rollaway".
Our room was large, HISTORIC and very quiet - actually had its own entry hallway. There were mostly large suites or apartments on this floor and all the guests were well-tailored! Even though we were usually dressed as typical "out of town" tourists, the friendly elevator operators (yes the guests in the Waldorf Towers get their own PRIVATE elevators with actual gloved operators on duty 24 and 7) always treated us with respect and true courtesy.
The lounge for guests on the Concierge level and the Towers on the 24th floor was ALWAYS stocked with fine beverages and food - all day and night.
We also had the option of using a PRIVATE entrance for The Waldorf Towers that gave you the feeling of being very VIP (it is where the Presidents come and go). Yes many famous people have stayed and lived at this great establishment - incl. Gen MacArthur and quite a few U.S. Presidents. The flags on Park Avenue always correspond to the countries of Ambassadors "in residence" (the United Nations is close by).
Our last night in NYC included attending the Broadway Revival of "KISS ME KATE" - written by Cole Porter who at one time actually lived in the hotel. His piano is in one of the restaurants.
If you don't stay here, at least come for a tour. The lobby clock shouldn't be missed and SUNDAY Brunch is exquisite.
This is THE HOTEL for "fancy gatherings" - it has one of the largest Ballrooms in NYC (3 stories high).
It is an experience we shall never forget and WE WILL BE BACK!
This is simply THE BEST Hilton Hotel in the WORLD!
You CAN go back in time and be pampered.
