| Dhano923's Full Review: The Mirage Hotel And Casino |
First off, I'm going to mention that I never stay at the Mirage. I find the prices to be too high for their rooms, considering I hardly ever spend time in my room when in Vegas. So I usually end up at the Luxor where I can get a decent room for half the price. I do however, enjoy the Mirage for other amenities.
First off, the Mirage is a very classy casino. They have a nice exterior that says "No Nickle Slots Here!" (they might have a few machines somewhere in the casino, but I've never seen them). Walking into the casino, you enter a wide lobby, complete with a small stream, a bridge and lots of lush, tropical type plants. This is a great place to take pictures, too, if you're into that sort of thing.
The casino is to the left of the lobby. They have almost every type of slot machine imaginable. They offer many different tables for card games and other gambling opportunities. I usually stick to the slot machines, but I have tried out the roulette table here. No, I didn't win. The slots, unfortunately, aren't as loose as they are at Luxor or Excalibur, but they help pass your time. The last couple times I tried roulette, there were so many people waiting to place bets that it was hard to even get near the table. By the time I finally got close enough, I wasn't even in the mood to play it anymore. They do keep the majority of their tables open, so it wasn't crowded due to lack of dealers, but I think because the people who frequent Mirage aren't the type to place a couple of bets, lose, and walk away. These are die-hard, experienced gamblers.
The casino area also has a snack area and a couple bars. The snack area is good if you just want to grab a quick bite to eat. It's located towards the side of the casino (left from the lobby, keep walking and it's on your left) They have really good chili cheese fries, and their donuts and muffins looked good too, although I didn't try them. The couple next to us was sharing a plate of buffalo wings, which also looked really good too. Prices were pretty reasonable; our chili cheese fries were only $2.50 and were enough for me and my husband.
We always look forward to having Sunday brunch at the Mirage. For about $17, you can enjoy one of the best buffets I've had in Vegas, or anywhere else for that matter. They offer chilled shrimp, crab legs, some type of roast (sometimes prime rib, or roast beef or a roasted turkey). They also have an omelet bar where you can create an omelet with your choice of fillings. They also offer chinese, italian, mexican and other international cuisines. Everyone can find something to enjoy during Sunday Brunch. The wait can be long, but the staff serves complimentary champagne in the lines, so that's a nice touch. The staff inside the buffet area is always helpful, and is great at getting drink refills and clearing empty plates.
I've also heard good things abot the Japanese restaurant Mikado. They serve Teppan style food (think Benihana: they cook the food in front of you). They also have sushi, if you're in the mood for that. The last time we were in Vegas, we thought we would have dinner at Mikado, but they were completely booked. We had decided only that afternoon that we wanted to eat there, so it was late notice, and we weren't surprised that they were booked. The place is packed everytime we walk by. I would recommend making reservations ahead of time.
The Mirage is also home to the famous Sigfried and Roy White Tigers. You can view them in their home, and watch them. There's no charge to see the Tigers, although the actual Sigfried and Roy show is expensive (around $60-80/ticket). I've been told that the show isn't all that great, so I've never seen it, but I always stop to see if we can see those gorgeous tigers.
Mirage and Treasure Island are owned by the same parent company, so they have a tram that runs between the two hotels. This makes it easier to travel back and forth if you want to visit. Trams run every few minutes, and are a great way to move around, especially in the summertime when you don't want to be in the hot sun.
Overall, I really enjoy visiting the Mirage. They offer some great service. I've been told the rooms are also nice, but as I mentioned before, I can't see myself spending $200/night for a room I'll only be in to sleep (4-5 hours at that). But if you're looking for some great food, and reasonable gambling, Mirage is a good place to go.
Note: I'm rating the rooms as good because while I've heard they are nice, the prices are too high for me. So Good is the average rating on Epinion's rating scale. Room rates are also why I am giving Mirage a 4 instead of a 5 star rating.
