| Pampushky's Full Review: The Mirage Hotel And Casino |
Review Topic: Overview
People outside of Las Vegas take this city for granted. You all come here and then complain if one little thing is wrong. I was born and raised in this city, and think that native Nevadans should speak up more instead of letting tourists do all the talking.
The Mirage Hotel was the first of its type to open and use such flash and style for its visitors. From the moment you see the erupting volcano on the front of the property to the gigantic tropical fish tank at the check-in desk to the white tiger exhibit to the dolphins, where else do you find such things in hotels? This was really the first Las Vegas hotel which had locals impressed, and it is still a beautiful property, even though its visionary, Steve Wynn, is no longer a part of it.
I happen to think the buffet here is the best in Las Vegas. It isn't your stereotyped $2.99 dinner buffet, but the food is exceptional. The other restaurants here in the Mirage are gourmet quality, as well. When I have walked around the casino/hotel area I am always amazed at how little it feels like Vegas. Yes, the slots are still there, but it is lush and tropical inside. We Las Vegans start overlooking slot machines because we are near them so often, so I really notice the hotel aspects of this property instead of the flashing lights of the one-armed bandits.
The location of the Mirage is great, right on the Las Vegas Strip. The pool area is beautiful. The rooms are a bit bland, but when you come to Las Vegas you are coming to play, not to sleep.
The Mirage is always shown on any documentary about Las Vegas, and when you see how many choices there are to stay here in town, you'll understand why they make the Mirage a part of it.
One last thing for tourists...if you really think you are going to come to a major Strip resort, gambling $200 or so, and you plan to go home with a fortune, forget it. We locals know better than to gamble in the big resorts. There are plenty of better-paying casinos in Las Vegas, such as The Station Casinos, Suncoast Resort, Gold Coast, and many other smaller places. Sure, there are occasional big winners at these megaresorts, but take Vegas for what it is...a playground for tourists. Enjoy your stay, and come back soon.
